At just 2:44, Alexander the Titan’s Mama Agnes proves that scary things really do come in small packages.

Wasting no time, we’re introduced to a young girl who seems to be home alone. She calls her mom several times, but each call is rejected. Her mom then sends a text saying she can’t talk, and her daughter replies that something smells rotten in the house.

We soon find out what it is.

She goes to the kitchen, lets some light into the house, and turns to find her mother, or something pretending to be her mother, lurking in the next room. It’s a subtle but genuinely creepy image. They have an awkward conversation that is interrupted by a FaceTime call from her real mom.

But it’s too late. The doppelgänger is already standing in front of the younger girl, looking oddly menacing. And that is the film.

Simple. Effective. Scary.

And all of this happens in the same amount of time it takes to watch a cute cat video.

Personally, I love shorts like this. They embody the kind of can do attitude every filmmaker should have. The film establishes a relatable situation, introduces one unsettling twist, and gets out before overstaying its welcome.

In just two years, the movie has amassed over 9 million views and continues to grow. Sometimes quick is better. Sometimes getting straight to the point is all you need.

Instead of watching another cute cat video, watch this instead.
